The Anza Trail Runs Through Yuma!
Did you know the historic 1775–76 Anza Expedition Trail crossed right here in Yuma, AZ? Over 240 Spanish colonists made their way through this region on their journey to establish a Spanish presence in San Francisco. The Quechan Tribe, which long controlled the Yuma Crossing, assisted the Spaniards with crossing the mighty Colorado River here at Yuma, helping to ensure a successful journey for the expedition.
You can explore this history for yourself at the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, where an interpretive sign shares the story of the Anza Trail and its lasting impact.
As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Anza Trail and America 250, there’s no better time to reconnect with the history that shaped our community and the West.
Plan your visit today and walk where history once did!
